Rim Current variations in the Black Sea

Discover the seasonal variability of the Black Sea circulation.

"Black Sea Physics Analysis and Forecast" belongs to the MyOcean catalog.

This basin-scale model is used for continuous analysis and forecast of the Black Sea circulation and stratification. The model output includes dynamical sea level, three-dimensional fields of current velocity, temperature and salinity.

This product enables to see seasonal variability of the Black Sea circulation.

In winter, the basic flow - the Rim Current, spanning the entire the Black sea, is stable and intense.

At the end of Spring, the Rim Current weakens and begins meandered.

The animation here enclosed shows significant details of the Black Sea circulation and its variability from January to April 2012. Vigorous mesoscale eddies, meanders and filaments could be revealed which pinch off coastal recirculation regions or Rim Current intrusions towards deep water.

For example, several anticyclonic eddies have been observed, located between the Rim Current and the
coast: along the Crimean Peninsula and close to the Bosphorus region.

The most prominent sub-basin scale feature is perhaps the quasi-permanent Batumi eddy located in the easternmost basin of the Black Sea. These eddies play an important role in the transport of nutrients from coastal areas to deepwater ones.
